Europe Day as a Public Holiday

Luxembourg is the only European Union Member State where Europe Day, celebrated on 9 May, is a legal public holiday

Introduced in 2019, this decision reflects the country’s strong and long-standing commitment to European integration. The creation of this new public holiday was foreseen in the government’s 2018-2023 coalition agreement and adopted by law, placing Europe Day alongside Luxembourg’s national celebrations.

By granting citizens a day off to mark this occasion, Luxembourg gives concrete expression to the importance of the European project in its national identity.

Europe Day commemorates the Schuman Declaration of 1950, the founding moment of the European Union, and highlights the values of peace, unity and cooperation. Making it a public holiday underlines the central place that Europe holds in Luxembourg’s history, daily life and future

Luxembourg is not only one of the founding Member States and seat to many EU institutions, it is above all a place where Europe is lived on a daily basis.
