The European Union flag has been present at every edition of Europe Day in Luxembourg since the very first celebration in 1996, standing as a constant symbol of unity and continuity.
For nearly 30 years, the same flag has accompanied the event, witnessing the presence of many personalities, including the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, national authorities such as ministers and members of the Luxembourg Parliament, as well as representatives of the European Parliament, EU institutions based in Luxembourg, and ambassadors of EU Member States.
More than a ceremonial element, the flag reflects the values at the heart of the European project.
Its circle of twelve gold stars on a blue background symbolises unity, harmony and solidarity among the peoples of Europe. The number twelve does not refer to Member States but represents completeness and perfection. Each star holds an upright position, reinforcing the idea of stability and shared direction. Together, they form a timeless emblem of Europe’s unity in diversity.
